My Polyvore: 1st "Lunch" Date

This post is for my girls still dabbling in the dating scene! This weekend, one of my good friends will be going on a 1st date (meeting for lunch) with a new man "boy" (he must show & prove)! Of course being friends we had to discuss what she should wear so I was inspired to create this set.

"1st "Lunch" Date

  • I chose a skater dress because its like over 80 degrees in Charlotte, most likely nervousness is going to consume you whether it is hot outside or not, and the last thing you want to do on a 1st date is let the "boy" see you sweat! That is No Bueno!!
  • For shoes I went with booties. Yes I know I just said its hot outside, so the typical person would wear opened toes shoes! I agree if the date was outside but if inside the booties would work because it may be cool inside and if the date is going great it may move into a dinner date! Also I like to take advantage of all opportunities to wear 5in heels! The higher the heel the more your legs are accented! Plus I don't expect that they will be doing any activities that will cause extreme pressure to the feet! Talk Talk Talk!
  • The creame & black hand bag, stud earrings, arrowhead ring, chain & band bracelet, and shades are all simple accessories that can give modern & mature look!

"Crowned King" Themed Diaper Cake

Hello Gals! This weekend I had the opportunity to re-connect with my creative side outside of my earrings and create another diaper cake for a client! I really enjoyed doing it because I was able to play around with spray glue, spray paint, acrylic paint, and best of all GLITTER!! The hostess of the shower requested something simple but topped with a crown & covered with polkadots, so that's what I gave her!!! I loved the end result so I thought I'd share!

I am glad I can be a part of a memory for baby Ryan "King" Jr!

Entrepreneur Spoghtlight: Interview with Jordan Bell, Founder of Equalnox Clothing

This month's Entrepreneur spotlight is with the creative Jordan Bell of "Equalnox Clothing Inc".  Quick Bio: A North Carolina native,  23 year old Jordan Bell has always had a talent in designing and creating. Influenced by old classic films and his love for art, at the age of 21, Jordan took his love and talent to the next level and founded Equalnox Clothing along with Co-Founder Chris Harrison. Now 2 years later, the Equalnox brand is growing each day as everyday people carry the Equalnox label in the streets. Jordan was so gracious to answer a couple of questions for me on how Equalnox came to be and I must say he kept it as real as it can get!

You design t-shirts and tanks, how long have you been doing this? Is there anything else you do?
I have been designing clothes for a little over 3 years now. I am a free lance graphic designer as well.

Equalnox is a unique name, how did you come up with that?
Chris Harrison (co-founder) and I were walking one day. We both knew a group of producers that went by the name equinox and we liked the way it sounded, but we decided to put our own spin on it and we got Equalnox!

What really is Equalnox and how did Equalnox come to be?
Equalnox is a brand that makes the day and night theme that the real word has and puts it in to clothing. We love vintage culture and street fashion so we mixed the two. Equalnox came to be by love and hard work.

Would you consider yourself an entrepreneur? If so, why?
I guess by definition I am, but I think as people from America I am doing no more than anybody my age wants to do. I feel most people want to do what they love but get paid doing it. I just so happen to be able to do it. I am no different than anybody else with a dream.

How did you build up an entrepreneur spirit?
I have always been around hard working people! My parents work hard, my two older brothers work hard. I really think its in my blood to want something and go get it!
Is there anyone or any certain thing that motivates you?
No, there is not one specific thing that motivates me. It could be a quote, painting or music. I find beauty in many things.
Why did you decide to go into the textile & clothing industry and not another one?
Well I have been drawing since I was 3, but I never knew how to showcase my work, while at the same time make a profit. I have always been into clothing and fashion so it just came to me one day and clothing just made sense.

I am sure you faced problems we all face when starting like no sales or things not moving well. How do you keep moving on in spite of all these hurdles?
Yeah, its hard being an independent brand. I feel like quitting every day, but when I think about how far we have come, I realize it is too far to quit now and I have too many people looking up to me. I keep friends and family in the back of my mind at all times so when times do get hard I don't stop. I think it's like when you love something or someone but when you are walking on that line of quitting, but you keep going.
Is it easy to be an entrepreneur?
          HECK NO!
Are you the only one managing your business, or do you have staff?
Co-founder, Chris Harrison and Designer, Jordan Adam have been there since the start and are as important as I am. This brand would be nothing without them by my side.

If you can turn the hands of time, forwards or backwards, what would you do?
I wouldn't mess with time! I feel that everything that has happen and didn't happen is what makes this brand and I love everything about it.
What do you think it takes to succeed in business?
I can't really give a straight answer to that. I wish I could, but everybody is different so every business is. The corn ball thing to say is to "work hard". I think it is cheesy to say, but it is so true. One of the main reasons people fail at something is because they only see the lime light of it, or the cool aspect of it. They shy away when they see the hard work that goes on behind the scenes. You gotta get dirty to look clean!

Since you have already went through the steps of developing your business, your brand, and your online shop, what advice would you like give those who are just starting or  desire to start?

Make sure you really love what you are doing. At its core, clothing is art. You can't fake it. It has to be honest, it will show in your work!

You have some really creative & fashionable items! Where can my readers go to get their own Equalnox shirt?
Thanks! They can go to equalnoxclothing.com and we have some really dope spring items coming so make sure you and your amazing readers stay on the look out for that!

                                          facebook:        Equalnox Clothing

Jordan, is there any last words you want to leave my readers and are there any plans in the near future for Equalnox besides the spring line?

If they want to do something that they love, just do it. Forget the money, don't let that be the main motivator. Money comes and goes. Make sure your fuel is the passion for your craft. Equalnox hopes to release it's largest collection of clothing sometime this year. Stay tuned.

I am so glad I had the opportunity to pick Jordan's brain and find out more about +Equalnox Clothing. As he mentioned earlier. Jordan is also a freelance graphic designer and does an amazing job with logo designs. Make sure you keep him in mind for all your branding needs!

So what did you all think? I would love to hear from you. Feel free to leave a comment.

Facial Favorites!

I get compliments on my skin all the time and although I have definitely seen better, I have to say my skin is pretty clear and smooth for the most part. I always get the question what do I do to maintain a fresh clean look? Well today I am going to share a few items that I use on my skin on daily or weekly basis. These are the ONLY products I have been using in the last 6 months.

First and Foremost -- DRINK LOTS OF WATER!!!!!!!
I don't LOVE water but I surely don't hate it. So I try to drink as much as possible throughout the day. Other things I drink are juice and tea. No SODA if you can help it! Caffeine can cause a lot of damage to your skin and body.

I cleans my face when I wake up and before I go to bed. This is a MUST! My basic cleanser is good ol H20! That's right, WATER! Weather I am wearing makeup or not, at night all I use is a wash cloth and warm water and I wipe my face in sections from the inside out. I like to start from the middle using my nose as the guide. I know I know, you think I am not cleaning out my pores with just water. Well, that may be the case but it works for me. Your skin needs water and drinking it is not the only way to get it in your body! My favorite part about this cleanser is that its all NATURAL!

I also use Jergens Pure & Natural Mild Soap on my face occasionally. I know I know, many say you aren't supposed to use bar soap on your face as it is too harsh. Well for me that is not the case. I discovered this worked for me after I had a rash of some sort (never found out what it was) on my face and neck area. After one time using this soap, the rash was 100% gone. So I decided to use it daily and as I did the black spots on  my face began to lighten. Now that all the dark spots are pretty much gone, I only use this soap on my face twice a week.

Occasional cleanser:
I occasionally, and by occasionally I mean once a week, cleanse with Clean & Clear Morning Burst Cleanser for oily skin. I will cleanse with this once a week twice that day now and typically it is when I know I have a very long day ahead of me full of activity and sweat. I apply water to my face first, then I apply about a dime size amount of the cleanser on the tips of my hand, then I apply to my face in a circular motion coating all areas. A little goes a long way. I love this stuff but I found that not only if over used it will make your skin overly dry, but also when I used it every day for a week and then missed one day, my face would act out! No MAAM! So I decided to wheen myself off using it daily and now only on occasion. My favorite part of this cleanser are the blue beads!

What is exfoliating? Its a fancy word for the process of peeling or buffing off any dead skin cells. This therefore helps prevent blackheads and pimple outbreaks. I exfoliate with  cinnamon or brown sugar and honey. I apply 3 tbsp of honey and 1 1/2 tbsp of brown sugar or cinnamon. I apply this on my face as a mask and let sit for 15 minutes. Then I rinse of with warm (more cold than hot) water and my finger tips. Over exfoliating can strip the healthy oils in your skin and leave your skin rough, red, and dry.

Moisture is key to my skin care. Some stray away from moisturizing because either they feel there skin isn't dry or it will make their even more oily for those with oily skin. I personal have oily skin and I moisturize daily. Let's face it, I am a African American woman and when water is applied to my skin and no moisture to follow, my skin looks dry and ashy! That's not cute! Some use a toner instead. I haven't experimented with toners so I cant speak on those.

I do agree with those who say a moisturizer that is clogged with a lot of chemicals - ingredients you cannot even pronounce are not beneficial for your skin. So I chose to go the healthy route. You can always use essential oils like olive oil or coconut oil, that may not be or go to. You def want to use something that is oiled based though. I choose to use natural African Shea Butter. I say natural, because there are Shea butters that are sold that have been mixed with X, Y, and Z. What do you all know that starts with these letters??? lol EXACTLY! I apply a very very small amount, about a dime size to my face every morning after cleansing. I do not apply at night when I cleanse my face because when your body has settled and you are resting, there are functions that the body goes through to rejuvenate your entire body. On top of that, my skin can be dry when I go to bed...nobody will see me!

Pimple Outbreak:
I can almost guarantee a pimple will appear on my face a couple of days before my period or when I have something big coming up. Anxiousness is a BEAST! Now that I have found a method to control that I don't over stress it.

Here is what I do: When I spot the pimple coming on, I mix together a very simple concoction! Water & Aspirin! Yes, the aspirin you take for headaches!! Depending on the size of the pimple and how many will depend on how many aspirins  you will need. I typically use two baby aspirins and 1 tsp of water. With my finger tips I apply enough of the paste directly onto the area before I go to bed at night. The next morning VIOLA! the pimple is either gone or dried up to where the redness is gone. It all depends on the size of it.

Other Natural Facial Items:

  • Lemon Juice - I use lemon juice as a natural bleacher for any dark spots I may have.
  • Witch Hazel - I use witch hazel as a natural toner and a disinfectant on my skin. It helps prevents inflammation and acne build up.

So there you have it! Those were my facial favorites that I use to promote healthy smooth and clear skin. If you try any of these items please let me know how that goes for you. Also if you have any other natural facial tools, please share!

Until Next Time!
